1783g Antique French 950 Sterling Paillard Freres Figural Jardiniere Centerpiece
Circa 1870s, this massive jardiniere was created by Paillard Freres of Paris and is crafted from solid 950/1000 sterling silver. It features large figural rams at the top of each hoofed foot and is adorned with a number of putti, floral elements, ribbons, birds, and smaller ram heads. The silver portion alone measures an impressive 14 1/2 inches across, 9 1/2 inches wide, and stands just over 5 1/2 inches tall. With the insert it measures 15 inches across, 10 1/4 inches wide, and stands 6 3/4 inches tall. It is clearly hallmarked with the French 1st standard Minerve mark indicating a silver pureness of 950/1000, a slightly higher purity than sterling silver. It also has the makers mark for Paillard Freres of Paris France. The silver weight alone is 1783 grams, or 57.33 troy ounces. It is solid silver and not weighted. Exceptional as this jardiniere is, it is not without its flaws. Unfortunately the glass insert is badly damaged and beyond repair. Additionally, there are a few missing or broken pieces of silver in the design - though the missing and damaged portions are only noticeable under close scrutiny. If one is able to see past the damage it will make an incredible addition to a collection of any caliber!
