Sterling Silver Centrepiece Antique Edwardian 1906
Sterling Silver Centrepiece - Antique Edwardian (1906). A magnificent, fine and impressive large antique Edwardian English sterling silver centrepiece; an addition to our ornamental silverware collection. This magnificent and large antique silver table centrepiece, in sterling standard, has a rectangular shaped form reflecting a podium design. The Edwardian centrepiece consists of a large central circular bowl flanked with two smaller vessels, all onto pedestal supports. Each detachable circular receiver is plain and embellished with an applied opposing scrolling border to the undulating rim. The supporting silver bowls are each supported to a circular knopped base, with a screw thread terminal, securing to a plain swept pedestal with volute scrolling upper and lower terminals. The central bowl features a circular spreading foot, accented with a further screw thread to the underside and mounting a large cut cornered swept pedestal ornamented with a cast and applied panel depicting Caernarfon Castle. This magnificent antique silver centrepiece features two silver opposing Welsh dragons passant, to either side of the central pedestal; each dragon is embellished with cast decoration replicating the details of the dragon's scales and anatomical features. Each opposing end of the elongated base features a silver goat, lying down; each goat is embellished with further cast decoration reproducing the animal's fur coat and anatomical features. The underside of the centrepiece allows access to the screw fitments securing the individual components in situ.
This magnificent silver centrepiece is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire. Caernarfon Castle (Welsh: Castell Caernarfon) is a medieval fortress in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, north-west Wales. This Grade I listed building was erected in the 14th century and through the rebellions and sieges of the centuries it fell into a state of disrepair, until the 19th century saw rejuvenation through state funding. This castle was used for the investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1911 and again in 1969.
This antique sterling silver centrepiece is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. This impressive centrepiece has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition.
The cast decoration is all very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the base, in addition to part hallmarks to the landscape panel and each detachable components including the bowls, models and pedestalds are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the superior gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of antique silverware. Diameter of central bowl 31.5cm/12.4. Diameter of small bowls 17.1cm/6.7.
